About Libi Kavanah
Raised in a caring and compassionate home, Ms. Kavanah was taught at a young age that love is compassion in action. As a young child, she would accompany her father when he went to serve the Homeless on sandwiches and hot coffee.
As a child, Ms. Kavanah was invited to many of her omni-faith neighborhood friends religious services.
These ranged from Unitarian to Jewish to Catholic. When she was in her teens she joined with the Unitarian teen group and helped in forming and running a street medical office for homeless teens.
This fired her passion and she became involved in changing high school standards to fit current concerns of 'modern' students.
These student concerns were social justice, peace and the environment.
Ms. Kavanah became involved in creating a high school dedicated to the arts, social justice, peace and the environment.
The high school is still a part of the Portland Educational Choice.
Ms. Kavanah won awards for the innovative work she did as a teen,
including a City wide award for her
Innovative Multi-discipline Art Project
that highlighted
social change.
Ms. Kavanah went on to college in NYC.
She graduated with a BS in
Developmental Psychology and Early Childhood Education from Hunter City College.
She also studied with Innovative Educators at the New School of Social Research -
Pioneers in changing the classroom and education model for schools everywhere.
As part of her practicum with the NSSR,
she worked with students who had
reading challenges in Harlem.
Ms. Kavanah designed a
specialized reading program that included writing in sand, sand paper letters and physical activity.
Her program was highly successful.
After she graduated, she returned to the West Coast and Eugene, OR.
Here she worked with top innovators in the
field of learning.
She began teaching a combined
kindergarten - 2nd grade classroom
bringing fun, laughter, innovation and a desire to investigate and learn
to her classroom and students for over 30 years.
In the mid 1970's Ms. Kavanah had her first child with her husband who eventually told her
he was gay.
His story of fear and hiding
spurred her on to work for the
rights of gay people -
including their parental rights-
tirelessly.
Ms Kavanah wrote a
multi-cultural curriculum that was
implemented by the local school district.
This included lesson plans on
family structures.
Through her classroom experience,
Ms. Kavanah became aware of the
effects of Domestic Violence
on the learning ability of students.
She then wrote a
handbook outlining the
devastating affects of
violence in the home on
students ability to do well in a school setting.
This handbook was presented to
teachers and professionals - including judges- and became used statewide.
Ms. Kavanah was invited to
present her findings at conferences
throughout the state of Oregon.
In her early high school years in Portland OR , she was taught about the importance of a
healthy eco-system.
Ms. Kavanah has been a
passionate environmentalist all of her life.
And yes! Of course,
she created a classroom curriculum
just for the purpose of
teaching ecology to students of any age.
This curriculum is still used today.
Ms. Kavanah has worked
all of her life for peace.
She has been a student of
Peace through Active Process
all her life.
Her many
community activities
reflect this
dedication to
Living Peace.

Guide
We are all 'Compassion Activists'.
Every time we offer a hand,
a smile, an ear...
Every time we
'show up in the world and are
our selves,
We are
compassion in action.
However, sometimes we need a guide, a lumiere, a lighthouse, to remind us
who we are
and to help lead us
out of the storms of 'life' and
back into the de' light
where love, peace, understanding, kindness and compassion live.
Here we find joy, laughter, peace
and a sense of belonging. Here we find 'home'.lk
